We’ve been busy here at Johnston’s, and now that football season is here, we’re spending our weekends catering tailgating parties from Valdosta to Tallahassee. Recently, the Valdosta Daily Times featured Johnston’s in an article about a tailgate party for VSU. You won’t believe the hog picture! HOG TAILS

Valdosta Daily Times

Chef Hal Bennett of Monticello, Fla., “scored a touchdown” with his presentation of a grilled hog complete with a Valdosta State University Blazer visor on its head, sunglasses over its eyes, a Blazer ring in front of its snout, and surrounded by corn and sausage, for the table of the VSU Blazer Grill Team tailgating group last weekend.

Bennett of Johnston’s Meat Market in Monticello is familiar to folks in the Valdosta area. Through the hickory smoked Boston butts and picnic hams he has prepared for fund-raisers, Bennett has helped Valdosta Middle School cheerleaders raise $4,000, the VHS football team raise $2,910, VHS baseball team raise $2,750, and the CrossPointe mission team, $910.

Bennett grew up in Echols County where he was valedictorian of Echols County High School in Statenville and received a scholastic scholarship to VSU. (click article link above for full story)

Summer is nearly done, but Johnston’s will be hosting one more summer event on Friday August 21st from 5-8 PM. This Friday we will enjoy the debut of the steel guitar at Johnston’s. Rick Knowles is going to be performing with Arlene and Leon Roberts of Arlene’s Classic Country band. Pure country and pure fun. For details, visit http://www.johnstonsmeatmarket.com/jammin.htm

Leon, born and raised in Tallahassee, played music most of his life. As a young boy he played the upright bass around Tallahassee. He left home and joined the navy at 17. During his 27 years in the navy, Leon played with different groups around the country. In 1961, Leon started playing the electric bass. In 1974 he became a student of the pedal steel guitar. Upon retirement in San Diego, California, he played five and six nights a week in one of the top bands in southern California. It was there, at the Kentucky Stud, where he met Arlene.

Arlene, born in Oregon, grew up in San Diego and played the pearly whites, piano and organ, and sang in the church choir. It wasn’t long before Leon had her transformed and playing the electric bass and singing in the honky tonks and bars. They married in December 1980. After moving to Tallahassee in 1986, Leon played with several local groups before Arlene formed a band, Arlene’s Classic Country. They played all over Tallahassee, Sneads, Tifton, GA, and more. They were members of the house band for the Sopchoppy Opry for 22 months, and made guest appearances on the show before and after that. Most of their playing now is charity events and private parties. They still enjoy their music and have a great time together.
